Scheduled Ongoing Mentor/Mentee Trainings
We have monthly round-table discussions on the second Wednesday of each month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. There will be a variety of speakers/activities each month. Please see the monthly newsletter for the current information and location of meeting.

Topics
. . . for Basic New Mentor Training and Ongoing Support Training

  • The role of the mentor;
  • Effective communication with your mentee;
  • Effective problem solving & crisis management;
  • Confidentiality, required child abuse reporting and other laws related to mentor volunteering;
  • Diversity training;
  • The "life cycle" of a mentor-mentee relationship;
  • Closure and saying "good bye";
  • Strategies for dealing appropriately with the mentee's family;
  • Resource and referral basics;
  • Trust building;
  • Youth issues.

Mentor Training Format:

The training is structured as a highly interactive, four-hour workshop. There are demonstrations, case studies, group activities, projects, round table discussions, guest presenters, and some "lecture."
If you are interested, please call the Center Director, Ruth Gordon, for an interview.

Please Note:

All mentors must "pass" all stages of the screening, one-on-one interview and the FBI background check in order to become a Certified Mentor. During this process, we will get to know you and try to find just the right match for you and for a child.
