Improving Mentoring Practices for All Children Today
HOW DO YOU SET A PRISONER'S CHILD FREE?
BECOME A MENTOR. WELCOME HIM INTO YOUR HEART.
Having a parent in prison presents some emotional and developmental consequences for children, as well as added risk factors. Having a mentor can greatly impact some of these factors by providing a safe and consistent presence in the youth's life.
The Mentor Center of Western Nevada has partnered with Western Nevada College and Ron Woods Family Resource Center to answer this need. The IMPACT program provides mentors to children of prisoners, to talk with them, spend time together, and enjoy outings. It is designed to help the children feel good about themselves and stay on-track in their school and home life.
Children of Prisoners: The Facts:
When your parent is in prison, so are you.
These children face a 70% probability of following their parents to prison at some point.
Carson City has 3 prisons within our boundaries, and 2 more close by.
These kids live in our neighborhood, go to our schools, attend our churches.
Do you know them?
Having a significant adult in your life can help to break the cycle.
Could you be that person?
If you're interested in becoming a mentor, contact the Mentor Center at 445.3346 (Ruth) or 445.3282 (Jane).
Jane Imamura is the Case Manager for IMPACT and is waiting to hear from you. If you are a parent or caregiver of a child who has a parent in prison,
call us. We can make a difference!
